Is is possible to link an POLYGON AREA on an image to a page on my site, or can the module only link grid cells to pages?

John, this is not possible. Polygon areas are used to define links to sub/detail maps/images. The information links or details can only be specified at the final level and as you mention only as points (squares) not polygons.
